Accordia Global Health Foundation is pleased to name Dr. Faith Osier as the 2014 recipient of the prestigious Merle A. Sande Health Leadership Award.
An external selection committee convened by Accordia chose Dr. Osier to receive the award, from a large pool of highly qualified applicants hailing from 8 African countries.
Faith Osier, MD, PhD, is a pediatrician whose work focuses on the development of effective malaria vaccines, through the identification of targets and mechanisms underlying naturally acquired immunity. She is currently a Clinical Research Fellow and Group Leader at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI)– Centre for Geographic Medicine Research.
“Faith is an absolutely outstanding scientist. She has a passionate long-term commitment to help other young researchers achieve their potential and ultimately improve the health of Africans throughout the continent. I can think of no other candidate who better fulfils the spirit and vision of the Merle A. Sande Health Leadership Award,” said Dr. Kevin Marsh, Director KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme, Kenya.
The award – created in 2010 in memory of Dr. Merle Sande, a founder of Accordia and renowned infectious disease specialist – recognizes the efforts of emerging African healthcare leaders who have contributed significant improvements to the health of their home communities and embody Dr. Sande's passion, intellectual drive, and spirit.
"Merle founded Accordia on the vision that the best way to transform health in Africa was from within. Through establishing and supporting sustainable local health institutions, Accordia is working to nurture promising young African physicians and scientists like Faith to empower them to make the transformative impact that is needed to improve health in Africa." said Accordia's Executive Chair Dr. Warner C. Greene. "The group of nominees for the Fifth Annual Merle A. Sande Health Leadership Award were incredibly strong. While Faith prevailed, I was so impressed with the roster of candidates. I am confident these young leaders are going to make an indelible mark on the continent."
Accordia will present the award to Dr. Osier in October 2014, at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.
