Serena is a UK-trained doctor with a background in Chemistry, and works at the Lao-Oxford-Mahosot-Wellcome-Research Unit, with Professor Paul Newton.
She is currently helping to coordinate the work of the medicine quality group of the Infectious Diseases Data Observatory, which seeks to share expertise and collate information to increase understanding of the prevalence and distribution of poor quality medicines around the world. The group is currently engaged in evaluating a number of portable screening devices to aid the detection of poor quality medicines, and in mapping the available data on the distribution of poor quality medicine worldwide.
Alongside this, she is coordinating a small pilot study to profile the clinical and biochemical phenotype of people with diabetes in Vientiane, including those with melioidosis.
