\n \n \n \nAbhilasha Karkey, medical microbiologist at our OUCRU Unit in Kathmandu, Nepal, received the 2018 Magill Fellowship at the ASTMH conference in New Orleans. \"Persistent gender inequality in science has severely limited women from achieving their potential to effectively contribute to scientific knowledge. I would like to grow as a leader and thereby encourage and inspire other scientists \u2013 especially women in South Asia.\"

\n \n \n \nCongratulations to Bob Snow, Oxford Professor of Malaria Epidemiology, elected this month Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences. The AAS nominates and elects individuals who have excelled in their fields of expertise as fellows and gives prizes to recognise scientists who have contributed to developing their fields in Africa.

\n \n \n \nOxford University has been ranked as the world's best institution for medical and health teaching and research in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for the eighth consecutive year. This ranking is based on criteria measuring teaching, research, industry income, international outlook and citations. It was noted that both research and clinical trials are supported by our network of international research units in Africa and Asia.

\n \n \n \nCTMGH have been nominated for the Market Research Society President's Medal, awarded annually to an organisation that conduct extraordinary research but who might not be recognised through the usual channels. Our Centre is noted for its ingenious use of freely available online satellite images to gath data on the use of antibiotics in unmapped and inaccessible villages in rural Thailand and Laos. Researchers use the images to identify representative clusters of potential participants.

\n \n \n \nCongratulations Bridget Wills, Professor of Tropical Medicine at our OUCRU unit in vietnam, awarded RSTMH Sir Rickard Christophers Medal. The Sir Rickard Christophers Medal is awarded triennially for work in tropical medicine and hygiene in its broadest sense and in particular for practical and field applications.

\n \n \n \nThe University of Oxford's Medical Sciences Divisional Panel has conferred the title of Associate Professor on three members of our academic staff: Rogier van Doorn (OUCRU), Lorenz von Seidlein (MORU) and George Warimwe (KWTRP). This title is awarded in recognition of their distinction in their respective fields and contributions to the research and teaching, and we congratulate them on their success.

\n \n \n \nDr Chris Paton, Head of the Global Health Informatics Group, was accepted as Fellow by the Faculty of Clinical Informatics Council on 8th August 2018. Clinical informaticians are qualified clinicians who transform health and care through their specialist knowledge and use of data, information, knowledge and information technology.

\n \n \n \nASTMH nominated Professor Rose McGready, SMRU Deputy Director, as an Honorary International Fellow. Rose received the prestigious award in recognition of outstanding accomplishment by an \u201cindividual not an American citizen who has made eminent contributions to some phase of tropical medicine and hygiene\u201d. Rose will formally receive her award at the ASTMH Annual Meeting, to be help 28 Oct-1 Nov in New Orleans, Louisiana.

\n \n \n \nOn 10 May 2018, SMRU Deputy Director Rose McGready was awarded the Alumni Award for Service to Humanity by the University of Sydney. The Alumni Award recognizes the personal contribution of alumni who, through service to philanthropy, improve the lives of those in need. It also seeks to recognize the significant involvement of Sydney alumni in projects that enrich local or international communities.

\n \n \n \nThe Royal Society recognises Professor Dominic Kwiatkowski\u2019s pioneering work on malaria, and particularly the use of genomic epidemiology to understand the evolutionary arms race that is going on between human, parasite and mosquito populations in Africa and other tropical regions of the world. Professor Kwiatkowski joins an existing membership of approximately 1600 of the most distinguished scientists from the United Kingdom, other Commonwealth countries and the Republic of Ireland.

\n \n \n \nVisiting Professor Faith Osier has been selected as a TED Fellow, joining a class of 20 change-makers from around the world who will deliver a talk on the TED stage this April in Vancouver. Professor Osier studies how humans acquire immunity to malaria, translating her research into new, highly effective malaria vaccines.

\n \n \n \nDr Jake Dunning, Honorary Visiting Research Fellow in Tropical Medicine (ERGO) and Deputy Programme Director for High Consequence Infectious Diseases, NHS England, is appointed MBE for services to Clinical Research. Dr Dunning led clinical trials during the terrible Ebola epidemic in West Africa.

\n \n \n \nProfessor Kevin Marsh, Director of the Africa Oxford Initiative and Senior Advisor at the African Academy of Sciences has been selected to receive a Drexel Prize for scientific excellence. Together with 6 other prize winners, Professor Marsh received his award uring the 2017 International Symposium on Molecular Medicine and Infectious Disease in Philadelphia, USA.

Jeremy Day, Professor of Infectious Diseases heads the CNS and HIV Infections Research Group at OUCRU; Eduard Sanders, Professor of global health practice leads the HIV care and research programme at KWTRP.
