The Investigating Quality and Safety and Intervention Design in Health Services (IQID) course, led by Professor Mike English (Professor of International Child Health, University of Oxford; Head of Health Services that Deliver for Children [HSC]) and Professor Charles Vincent (Emeritus Professor of Clinical Safety Research, Imperial College London; NIHR Senior Investigator), was held from 28th April to 2nd May 2025 at Christ Church, Oxford.
This highly successful course, which has previously been delivered in Oxford (December 2022, September 2023) and Hanoi (January 2024), explores the 'diagnosis' of health care delivery challenges, explains interventions as change processes and supports participants to develop practical strategies for evaluation and intervention.
This year's participants were from a range of institutions, including the Royal College of Surgeons’ National Cancer Audit Collaborating Centre (NATCAN) Clinical Effectiveness Unit, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, the Childhood Acute Illness & Nutrition Network (CHAIN), the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme, as well as researchers from Oxford University with expertise in palliative care, and the management of patient risk in urgent primary care settings. By the end of the week each team or individual had produced a detailed practical plan to guide their project or programme development.
Topics covered included the use of investigatory tools and frameworks, theories and frameworks that can help inform intervention design, and intervention project development. Emphasis was placed on peer learning and cross-contextual insight-sharing, with participants reporting significant value in engaging with professionals facing analogous challenges in diverse health system settings. One participant reflected on the course as “transformative within a week. Inspiring.”
