The FORESFA project's laboratory group met for a workshop in Trentino, Italy, with participants from Oxford, Edinburgh, London, and Vienna. The workshop focused on advancing the analysis of simulated samples, which are crucial to developing forensic techniques to analyse falsified medical products. Challenges in data integration, collaboration with external experts, and a workflow for the first pilot analysis of falsified samples were discussed.

Hospitals and Universal Health Coverage Meeting

The two-day meeting aimed to foster discussion between policy makers, practitioners and academics on the role of hospitals in the context of global efforts to ensure Universal Health Coverage. The meeting paid special attention to the roles of ‘district hospitals’ in low and middle-income countries while exploring how hospital care is evolving in high and low-income settings in response to shared global opportunities and challenges.

KWTRP hosted journalists from South Africa, Zambia, Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya who visited the programme for a tour that aimed to enrich the journalists’ training experience as part of a science communication training workshop for journalists in Mombasa. The team interacted with Dr Eunice Nduati who presented on IAVI work and they toured the research labs. The training will empower the journalists to communicate scientific concepts accurately and effectively to a broader audience.

He was hosted by colleagues within the Health Systems Collaborative group, Centre for Global Health Research, which shares the overall departmental vision of Universal Health.

Geneva Health Forum panel on the elimination of NTDs and the new WHO Roadmap

The WHO 2030 NTD Roadmap has just been launched, and a recent Geneva Health Forum panel took that as its starting point to discuss the possibility of eliminating neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Professor Philippe Guérin, IDDO’s Director, joined co-panellists Dr Amy Fall, the Global Health Medical for Africa Region Lead at Sanofi, Dr Mwele Malecela, Director of the Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases at the WHO, and Dr Nathalie Strub-Wourgaft, Medical Director at Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) back in November 2020.

Need for better community engagement during global health emergencies

A workshop held in Dakar, Senegal, 7-18 March, highlighted the need for better community engagement during global health emergencies. An international group of experts in community engagement for health research identified urgent measures to foster involvement of local communities in emergency research, such as the Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo.

Over 200 delegates travelled from more than 50 countries to attend the first ever conference on Medicine Quality and Public Health (MQPH 2018) in Oxford from 23-28 Sept. The conference, at Keble College, brought together experts in pharmacy, public health, chemistry, law, sociology, governance and ethics, from medicines regulatory authorities, academia, pharmaceutical industry, NGOs, and international organisations.
