Every person has the right to expect that when they use a medical product, whether medicine, vaccine or diagnostic kit, it works. But too often, that is not the case. Substandard medical products result from errors, negligence or poor practice in manufacturing, transportation and/or storage. In contrast, falsified products result from criminal fraud. Both innovative and generic products are affected.
Over 200 delegates traveled from more than 50 countries to attend the first ever conference on Medicine Quality and Public Health (MQPH) in Oxford from 23-28 September 2018. The conference brought together experts from academia, public health, pharmacy, chemistry, law, ethics, social sciences, public engagement, health policy, with national medicines regulatory authorities, NGOs, international organizations and donors. Conference partners presented the latest evidence on substandard, falsified and unregulated medicines, and discussed strategies to tackle this global challenge.

The Crossing Boundaries III forum on health systems research got off to an exciting start with a good number of guests in attendance. The two-day forum provided useful insights in ongoing research in low and middle income countries. Some of the topics discussed were on were on task shifting, interdisciplinary research methods, antimicrobial resistance, mental health and governance amongst others.

Dr Jacinta Nzinga engages nursing officers at the Mbagathi County hospital. The results dissemination activity took place on May 12th 2017. Discussions were lively and provided useful insights as to the activities surrounding the newborn units at the hospital. Feedback of research findings forms an important component of our work.
Professor Niels Peek introduced the three controversies in health data science in a well-attended public lecture at the Strathmore University on Wednesday. The three controversies discussed were; data shall be used only for the purpose for which they were collected, big data and predictive analytics should replace randomised clinical trials and to accelerate research, all medical and healthcare data should made available to data scientists.
Strathmore University this year hosted the Kenya Health Informatics Association (KeHIA), meet up that was rich in content with presentations and discussions from the University of Nairobi, the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme, Ministry of Health, University of Oxford, Strathmore University and Philips Health among others.
Documentation of patient history & essential key signs, within the Clinical Information Network (CIN), improved to over 90 percent across 14 hospitals. Reports generated indicate a steady improvement in data collection.
The LINK programme held its first full team meeting hosted by Professor Bob Snow in Nairobi, Kenya. This was a valuable opportunity for the London and Nairobi-based team members to meet for an update on the programme and to jointly plan activities going forward. In the first quarter of 2017, LINK will be working to develop profiles with National Control Malaria Programmes (NMCPs) in Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Sudan and Uganda.
A feedback dissemination meeting on the just concluded Nairobi newborn study took place on Monday 30th January and was attended by 75 delegates. Discussions were on: routine newborn care in newborn units, infrastructure and services available in health facilities, accessibility of drugs, newborn care in the maternity wards, material and human resource capacity, utilization of inpatient newborn services; and the quality of existing services.

KWTRP Health Systems team had a strong presence in the Health Systems Global meeting in Vancouver, Canada. This year's theme was \u201cResilient and responsive health systems for a changing world\".\r\n\r\nThe team made various presentations of work that they have done in both Kilifi and Nairobi, and were involved in a number of sessions including one on the RESYST consortium.
At this year\u2019s ASTMH Annual Meeting the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health will introduce research from our Major Overseas Programmes in Thailand, Vietnam, and Kenya, and groups based in Oxford: ERGO, IDDO, ISARIC, OHSCAR, TGHN, WWARN, and the MSc in International Health and Tropical Medicine.
A team from the Department of International Development (DFID), based in Nairobi, met with Senior Managers at the KEMRI - Wellcome Trust Nairobi offices including the Executive Director, Prof. Philip Bejon, on the 4th of March 2016. The DFID team was led by Lizzie Smith, Head of Profession Health.
MSc students from the CTMGH's International Health and Tropical Medicine course speak at the Oxford Union, on a debate about climate change and its effects on health.
