In settings with high level of poverty and over-stretched health services, researchers have even greater responsibilities to the communities and study participants. Strenghtening the ethics of research will help address the burden of disease and death born by low to middle income countries.

Vicki Marsh is an Associate Professor in Public Health at the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health (CTMGH), Oxford University, UK and a founder member of the KEMRI Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP) in Kenya, with roles in research, teaching, mentorship and Science and Ethics Governance in both institutions. Her research draws on empirical ethics approaches towards strengthening policy and practice in international health research. Originally trained in medicine and General Practice, Vicki’s early research on Malaria Home Care informed the Kenya National Malaria Control Programme and the WHO/TDR Roll Back Malaria strategy.
