Professor Déirdre Hollingsworth receives Simons Foundation Fellowship from the Isaac Newton Institute

Déirdre Hollingsworth, Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the University of Oxford, has been awarded a prestigious Simons Foundation Fellowship from the Isaac Newton Institute. This recognition supports her efforts in using mathematical modelling to improve global health outcomes. As part of this initiative, Déirdre is organizing a one-day event on August 13, 2024, focusing on pandemic preparedness. The event aims to address key policy questions through mathematical modelling, covering vaccine development, diagnostics and funding.
Professor Sassy Molyneux awarded five-year NIHR Global Health Research Professorship

Professor Sassy Molyneux has received a prestigious five-year NIHR Global Health Research Professorship to study how to better protect frontline staff in international health research from moral distress. This is one of only five to seven such `flagship’ professorships awarded by the NIHR each year to outstanding scientists.

OUCRU Indonesia scientist, Dr Edward Sutanto MPH, was awarded ‘Best Poster Presentation’ in the topic of Vaccine and Immunology at the International Pandemic Sciences Conference 2024. Edward’s poster showcased a recently completed study on Covid-19 vaccines for pregnant women in Indonesia.

Dr Shobhana Nagraj (HSC) is part of the Centre for the Advancement of Interprofessional Education (CAIPE) research group. The team received a prestigious Interprofessional Global Award from the Global Confederation for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice, for outstanding interprofessional teamwork and collaboration in healthcare research. The award was presented to team members at the Altogether Better Health XI conference in Doha, Qatar, November 6-9th 2023.

We were delighted to hear that MORU Deputy Director of MORU and Head of Malaria & Critical Illness, Prof Arjen Dondorp, has been awarded the highly prestigious 2023 George Macdonald Medal!! This medal recognises outstanding individual contribution for conducting research leading to significant improvements in health in the tropics. It is a joint award from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (RSTMH).

RECOVERY Trial coordinator, Professor Richard Haynes, has been appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to Global Health, and Senior Clinical Trial Manager, Lucy Fletcher, has been appointed MBE for services to Clinical Trials. The New Year Honours list recognises outstanding achievements by a wide range of extraordinary people from across the United Kingdom. People are awarded honours for achievements in their field of work (including health, education, science and technology), as well as for making a difference to their community.

Peter Macharia wins RSTMH Emerging Leader Award

Peter Macharia is a spatial epidemiologist and a postdoc interested in disease mapping, healthcare access and mapping population vulnerabilities at KEMRI Wellcome. He received the RSTMH 2021 Emerging Leader Award, which recognises significant contributions in leadership, mentoring and capacity building in those who are early in their careers.

A RECOVERY Collaborative Group paper has been announced as the 2021 winner of The British Medical Journal’s prestigious UK Research Paper of the Year Award. This award recognises original UK research that has the potential to contribute significantly to improving health and healthcare. The paper, “Dexamethasone in Hospitalized Patients with Covid-19”, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, described the discovery in June 2020 of the world’s first effective, readily available treatment for COVID-19 – the inexpensive steroid, dexamethasone.

His research interests are infectious diseases and high altitude medicine, and he has almost 300 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals. One of his primary interests is to encourage young people to do clinical research.

Susie Dunachie joins a prestigious group of leading health researchers in the latest cohort of NIHR Global Research Professors. These awards fund research leaders of the future to promote effective translation of research and to strengthen health, public health and care research leadership at the highest academic levels. Research conducted by Global Research Professors directly benefits people in LMICs. A Consultant in Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology, Susie works on the development of a vaccine to prevent death from melioidosis in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus in LMICs, and supports vaccine research in Thailand. Congratulations!
Clare Ling awarded honorary FRCPath

Dr Clare Ling has been made an honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath). Currently running Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) Microbiology department and supporting the unit’s molecular activities, Clare is a clinical scientist who has worked at SMRU on the Thai-Myanmar border since 2012.

Elisabeth Ashley - UK-trained physician who specialises in infectious diseases and medical microbiology & virology, and Director of the Lao-Oxford-Mahosot Hospital-Wellcome Trust Research Unit (LOMWRU) in Lao PDR since 2019, Liz is conferred the title of Professor of Tropical Medicine. Stuart Blacksell - Senior Research Scientist based at the Mahidol-Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU) in Thailand, Stuart is conferred the title of Professor of Tropical Microbiology.
