The Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health's groups are based on two sites in Oxford: New Richards Building and Peter Medawar Building

Directions to the New Richards Building

Travelling by bus

A regular bus service is available from the Oxford City Centre. Bus Route 4 goes past the Warneford Hospital bus stop, a short walk to the New Richards Building on Old Road Campus. More information is available from Oxford Bus Company, Tel 01865 785400.

Travelling by Park & Ride

The nearest Park & Ride service (900) runs from Thornhill Park & Ride on the A40, one mile east of Headington. This should take approximately 12 minutes depending on traffic. Further details about all the Park & Ride services to Oxford are available from Park & Ride website.

Travelling by train

We are three miles from Oxford railway station, with its frequent trains from London (Paddington & Marylebone) and many other parts of the UK. Allow 15 minutes by taxi from the station forecourt and 30 minutes by bus number 5. National Rail Enquiries - 08457 484950

Travelling on foot or bicycle

The New Richard Building on Old Road Campus is within walking distance of London Road, the Headington shopping centre. There are cycle racks sited on the campus. A map of Oxford’s cycle network is available from the Oxfordshire County Council.

Travelling by car

Parking on Old Road Campus is very restricted so it is advised that you look for alternative means of transport.

If you need to park then you must request a parking permit from your host prior to your arrival.  Please note that spaces are very limited and cannot be guaranteed.

Any vehicles parked on the campus without a valid parking permit are liable to be issued with a parking fine from Oxford University Security Services (OUSS).

Street parking is limited since many streets are restricted to residents parking permits only.

Travelling by coach

The Oxford Bus Company and the Oxford Tube operate a coach service to and from central London, stopping on London Road, Headington, Oxford.

Travelling by air

We  suggest booking your flights in and out of London Heathrow (LHR) or London Gatwick (LGW) as both airports have bus and train transport links to Oxford.

The Oxford Bus Company provides bus journeys which go from London Heathrow and London Gatwick and stop on London Road, Headington, Oxford. National Express Coaches cover Stansted and Luton airports.

Bus transfers

The most convenient way to travel from London Heathrow and Gatwick Airports is to take the Airline bus. Once you have collected your baggage please follow the signs to the bus station.

Tickets: you will need to purchase a period return ticket, which allows a return within three months. You can also pay with bank card or Euros or US Dollars for the tickets but only notes are accepted (no coins). Alternatively you can purchase tickets at least 36 hours in advance, or via the Oxford Bus Company app.

Frequency of Buses: every 30 minutes or so. Journey time one-way: approx. 80-90 minutes.

Please alight at the "Headington shops" bus stop. From there you can walk to the Centre for Tropical Medicine (20 minutes) or take a taxi if you have lots of luggage.

To call a taxi: dial 001 Taxis on +44 (0)1865 240000 or Royal Cars on +44 (0)1865 777333. Ask the taxi driver to pick you up on Kennett Road to take you to the New Richards Building (OX3 7LG) at Old Road Campus.

Train Transfers

From Heathrow

Heathrow Express leaves from Heathrow airport and takes you directly to London Paddington where you can catch a connecting train to Oxford.

Tube/Underground: take the Piccadilly line (blue line), change at Earls Court onto the Central (yellow) or District (green) lines (towards Edgware Road) and disembark at Paddington Station. From Paddington you can catch a connecting train to Oxford. This is the cheaper but more complicated option.

Journey time: 1-2 hours
Return ticket prices: £30-£50

From Gatwick

Take the Gatwick Express train to London Victoria. From London Victoria take the Tube/Underground to Paddington via the Central (yellow) or District (green) lines (towards Edgware Road) and disembark at Paddington Station. From Paddington you can catch a connecting train to Oxford.

Journey time: 2-3 hours
Return ticket prices: £30-£50
