Researchers at the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health have been working on malaria for decades. This year, for World Malaria Day on the 25th April, we are putting together an exhibition to showcase the tremendous amount of work undertaken by NDM units including the Jenner Institute and our network of Tropical Medicine research units.
Research includes basic research, diagnostics, drug discovery, clinical trials, bioethics and social sciences at the KEMRI Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP), Mahidol Oxford Research Unit Tropical Network (MORU), Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU), NDM Centre for Global Health (NDM-CGHR) including the Worldwide Anti-Malarial Resistance Network (WWARN). Scientists at the Jenner Institute co-developed R21/Matrix-M vaccine. WHO pre-qualifications of R21/Matrix-M vaccines were informed by studies led by our units which has been licensed by WHO to be used in several African countries.
In 2022, there were 249 million cases of malaria and 608,000 deaths worldwide. Malaria is often called an epidemic of the poor and it tends to inflict significant financial burdens on individuals and families.
Through this exhibition, we want to showcase that together, we can work towards a malaria-free world by raising awareness, fostering collaboration among stakeholders, and highlighting innovative solutions.
Come and visit the exhibition at the at the John Radcliffe Academic Centre in Oxford.
