THESIS
- Challenging resilience of health systems in fragile states: a case study of Sudan
Health systems in fragile states (FCAS) face complex and multidimensional challenges which compromise health system functioning. Strengthening and building resilient health systems within FCAS in the face of emerging politico-economic crisis, conflict, climatic hazards and infectious disease threats is paramount to improving maternal, newborn and child health, closing the inequity gap and promoting global health security. However, an evidence gap on how resilience is understood and operationalised in contexts of state fragility exists. My doctoral research aims to define how the resilience of health systems is conceived, assessed and enhanced in fragile states, taking Sudan’s health system at the interface of armed conflict, infectious threats, climatic hazards and state fragility as a case study, with particular focus on maternal, newborn and child health indicators as health system tracers.
My doctorate is funded by the Rhodes Scholarship and the Clarendon Fund Scholarship.
