Sabina Dongol

Head of Laboratories at OUCRU Nepal

Dr Sabina Dongol is a medical microbiologist with expertise in molecular diagnostics, laboratory management, and quality systems strengthening in resource-limited settings.

Her research focuses on enteric fever, antimicrobial resistance, nosocomial infections, and improving diagnostic strategies for acute febrile illnesses. She led a MODRA-funded project to enhance enteric fever diagnosis using bead-based immunoassay platforms. This work also facilitated collaboration between clinicians, laboratory teams, and hospital leadership to strengthen diagnostic pathways in clinical settings.

Dr Dongol is particularly committed to advancing microbiology laboratory capacity where infrastructure and quality systems are limited. Her leadership and technical expertise support the successful conduct of clinical trials and infectious disease research at OUCRU Nepal.

She is an active member of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) and the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID). She was selected for the inaugural ISARIC Leadership Programme for Scientists (ISARIC ILPS) and serves on the Technical Working Group for the DETECT-Asia programme (Strengthening Diagnostics for sEvere bacTErial infeCTions in Asia), led by ADVANCE-ID, a clinical research network based at the National University of Singapore involving more than 100 hospitals across Asia.
