Six journalists from a range of print, TV, radio and online backgrounds led a day of media training for the IHTM students.

The training introduces and practises tools which are important, not only for dealing with the media, but also for wider communications such as interviews and presentations.

Speaking about the training IHTM student, Thokozani Nyasulu, said,

The media training was insightful and eye-opening. Previously, I felt anxious about interacting with the media, but this training has boosted my confidence and equipped me with skills to handle even the toughest questions.

The topics covered included: understanding the media, what makes a news story, the importance of key messages and controlling your interviews. Students were recorded practising telephone, radio and TV interviews. Everyone received individual feedback and the students gained in confidence as the day progressed.

Commenting on working with IHTM, Victoria Smith, a Sony-award nominated TV, radio and print journalist from Media First said,

It’s a pleasure and a privilege for all of us at Media First to work with the health leaders of the future; helping to play a part in shaping their messages for the media and beyond.
