Mahidol University’s Faculty of Tropical Medicine, the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU), and the Thai Health Tech Association (THTA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration on health innovation, translational research, and capacity development, with the aim of advancing the translation of research into practical health technologies.

The MoU was signed by Assoc Prof Dr Weerapong Phumratanaprapin, Dean of the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University; Mr. David Burton, Chief Operating Officer of MORU; and Mr. Phongchai Petsanghan, President of the THTA. The signing ceremony took place at the Chalermprakiat Conference Room, Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, with Prof Nicholas Day, Director of MORU, attending as a witness.

Under this agreement, the partners will focus on strengthening collaboration between researchers and Thai health technology start-ups, particularly in the development of diagnostic tools and digital health solutions. This will be undertaken through business matching and consultation on health technology market feasibility and scale-up models, as well as the validation and evaluation of health technologies in real-world settings, to support the translation of research into practical use.

Planned activities under the MoU include exchange visits and knowledge sharing, joint research and innovation projects, and capacity‑building initiatives aimed at strengthening Thailand’s health innovation ecosystem. Through the Mahidol Oxford Translational Innovation Partnership (MOTIP), MORU will lead these efforts and facilitate the translation of research into products and services that can improve health outcomes across ASEAN, while also contributing to the strengthening of health systems in the region.

“This collaboration reflects our commitment to ensuring that high-quality research leads to meaningful health impact,” said Assoc Prof Dr Weerapong. “By working more closely with the health technology sector, we aim to support the development of solutions that are relevant, scalable, and responsive to real-world health needs.”

The MoU marks an important step for the Faculty of Tropical Medicine and MORU in strengthening collaboration with industry partners and supporting the translation of research and innovation into practice.
