Dr Martha Mwangome
Dr Mwangome is currently working at KEMRI/Wellcome Trust Research Programme in research scientist position in the Nutrition assessment and Intervention research group.
I am currently funded by Global Health strategy, Africa Research Excellence Fund(AREF) and Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. I am interested in identifying and testing novel and cost-effective approaches to assessment, prevention and treatment of acute malnutrition in infants and young children in Africa. Altogether I have more than 10 years working experience in public health nutrition research in Africa.
My work has largely focused on studying undernutrition in African infants aged below 6 months old (u6m) employing both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection and analysis. I have continued to focus on evaluating the potential of using simple anthropometry such as the mid-upper arm circumferences (MUAC) and novel approaches in body composition to define acute malnutrition and growth within this age group. This has included a recently concluded pilot study to implement the 2013 updated WHO guidelines for treating acute malnutrition in infants u6m funded by the Joint Global Health Trials and the Gates foundation.
My current work includes estimating body composition in malnourished infants u6m, assessing breastmilk composition consumed by malnourished infants u6m and developing post-discharge package of care for malnourished infants u6m recovering from hospital treatment.
I have emerging interests in nutrition in emergency settings, the double burden of malnutrition including concurrent wasting and stunting and health systems factors hindering the implementation of treatment guidelines for malnourished u6m.
