Nguyen Van Vinh Chau is a Visiting Professor of Infectious Diseases in the Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford. He currently serves as Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health and Deputy Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City.
Dr Vinh Chau received his MD from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City (1990), and completed his PhD at The Open University, UK (2009). He spent over 30 years at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City, including ten years as Director (2011–2021), where he led the integration of specialist clinical services with clinical and translational research on major endemic and emerging infections.
His research focuses on emerging infectious diseases, with a particular emphasis on strengthening the interface between research evidence and public health practice. He has extensive expertise in randomised controlled trials, diagnostic evaluation, and translational research exploring host immunity, viral pathogenesis, and the optimisation of treatment strategies in resource-limited settings.
He has served as principal or co-principal investigator on multiple multicentre studies funded by Wellcome, NIH, WHO/TDR and international partners. For decades, he has worked closely with OUCRU to integrate rigorous clinical research with health system strengthening, improving outcomes for patients with infectious diseases in low- and middle-income settings.
Currently, his work focuses on developing and evaluating innovative, evidence-based models for primary health care, including the application of digital health, integrated surveillance, and community-based interventions to strengthen early detection, prevention, and management of infectious diseases at the frontline of the health system.
