The Hilary term began with mocks which were closely followed by the eagerly anticipated annual debate at the Oxford Union.

Students debate at the Oxford Union

Students had been honing their presentation and communication skills since the beginning of the course and nervously awaited the opportunity to put them into practice.

The debates centred on climate change and the motions were:

Debate 1: “This house believes that carbon markets are the best way to address climate change.” The opposition was successful.

Debate 2: “This house believes that rich people rather than rich countries bear the greatest responsibility for climate change.” The proposition was successful.

Debate 3. “This house would ban high carbon healthcare practices even at the expense of short-term Healthcare outcomes.” The opposition was successful.

Hosting the debates were IHTM alumni Dennis Mazingi (IHTM 2020) and Lisha Jaena (IHTM 2020) who also made up the judging panel.
Students debated very well, drawing on their international experience to present fascinating arguments and, in all three debates, they managed to persuade members of the audience to change their minds.
