HSPiP is part of the Global Health Research and Practice core module and is led by Dr Dirk Horemans and Dr Elisha Kipkemoi Ngetich.
The week began with an introduction to the concept of a ‘health system’, its context and goals followed by an overview of the health systems framework. Across the week the focus is on providing more detail on key components of the health system, particularly health system financing, health workforce, service delivery, health information systems, stakeholder engagement as well as the national planning cycle.
Students discuss the health systems in their own countries, reviewing national health strategic plans, workforce and finance strategies, national packages of health services and monitoring and evaluation frameworks from their home country. Peer to peer learning is integral to IHTM and students benefit from the wide-ranging international experience of their colleagues as well as the teaching from leaders who are at the forefront of global health. In this year's cohort, students represent 17 different countries from across Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Throughout the week there are opportunities to discuss diverse experiences in conducting and leading health system strengthening interventions.
Sessions are a mix of interactive lectures, class activities and group work that supports in depth engagement with practical examples of the concepts and ideas.
